Boston, prepare for a surge of Irish fight fans in January at UFC Fight Night 59.
Already featuring featherweight headliner Conor McGregor and flyweight Patrick Holohan, the event now has a third Irish fighter: Cathal Pendred (15-2-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC), who takes on fellow welterweight Sean Spencer (12-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC).
UFC officials today announced the bout.
UFC Fight Night 59 takes place Jan. 18 at Boston’s TD Garden. The main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following prelims expected for FOX Sports 2 and UFC Fight Pass.
It’s not clear where Pendred vs. Spencer will be placed on the lineup.
Pendred, a former Cage Warriors champ who joined the UFC as a cast member on “The Ultimate Fighter 19,” looks for his third straight UFC win and his seventh consecutive victory overall when he heads to Boston, where he lived as a kid. The 27-year-old has earned a submission victory over Mike King and a decision win over Gasan Umalatov in his two octagon appearances.
He now meets Spencer, who’s shown promise during his five UFC bouts. After suffering a submission loss to vet Rafael Natal in his promotional debut, the 27-year-old Texas-based fighter has won three of his past four bouts. Most recently, earned a decision victory over longtime UFC fighter Paulo Thiago.
