Bonus magnet Joe Lauzon wants to be UFC's next Chuck Liddell or Matt Hughes

Veteran UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon isn’t sure how long he’s sticking around as an active fighter, but he has a good idea of what he’d like to do after he retires.

Lauzon wants to follow in the footsteps of ex-champs Chuck Liddell and Matt Hughes, and more recently Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who took behind-the-scenes roles with the promotion after hanging up their gloves.

“I would love to do something for the UFC were I’m working with the fighters,” Lauzon (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC), who next faces Evan Dunham (16-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale, told MMAjunkie Radio.

The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale takes place Dec. 11 at Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The fight serves on the event’s main card, which airs on FOX Sports 1.

Lauzon could definitely offer a few pointers for fighters cast into the spotlight. He broke into the UFC in 2006 with a shocking upset of ex-champ Jens Pulver and went on to appear on “The Ultimate Fighter 5.” Since then, he’s become a fan favorite for his aggressive style, which has won him a record 13 post-fight performance bonuses.

Lauzon also knows a few things about giving back to the community. After his son survived cancer, he’s become an advocate for prevention and treatment, participating in several charity events. Recently, he and teammates ate pizza to raise money for the Jimmy Fund, which raises funds for cancer care and research.

Not only that, but Lauzon and his training partner, Chris Palmquist, who helps run the popular website mixedmartialarts.com, know how to shoot a good video.

At the bare minimum, the UFC lightweight is a former IT professional who knows his way around a router.

“I think I’m pretty good on social media,” Lauzon said. “Maybe (I) could just help them out with content. Something like that, I would love to do. Something I can do from home. I don’t mind traveling to some shows, but I can’t move to (Las) Vegas, because my kid’s hospitals are all here.

“I want to do something after, but I’m not sure what. I think I have a pretty good list of things that I’m good at. I’ll find something. I’m not worried about it.”

Lauzon isn’t necessarily planning for the end of his career. He’s got an upcoming fight against Dunham, who offers comparable submission skills, and a bill of relatively good health after 11 years in the business of professional MMA.

He didn’t think his career would last this long, but he’s not necessarily in the mood to quit.

“Back in 2006, when I fought Pulver, I thought that was going to be one and done,” Lauzon said. “Maybe two or three if I stretched it. I didn’t know how it was all going to shake out. And here we are in 2015; I’ve had like 19 fights. Do I think I’m going to fight 10 more times? I don’t know. Maybe eight, maybe 10, maybe 12. I think it all comes down to staying healthy and avoiding injuries.”
