Both 185-pound standouts were cleared to compete at Friday’s Bellator 98 weigh-ins, with Shlemenko checking in at 183.25 pounds and Cooper tipping the scales slightly heavier at 184.75. Shlemenko and Cooper first met back in May 2011, with “Storm” walking away with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory.
Bellator 98 takes place Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., and airs live on Spike TV. The evening’s main draw was also supposed to feature Joe Warren’s return to the cage, but “The Baddest Man on the Planet” was deemed medically ineligible to compete by the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation. Due to Warren’s bout with Nick Kirk being pulled from the event, the evening’s main card broadcast will now feature lightweight standout Patricky Freire (155), who looks to return to his winning ways against the unbeaten Derek Anderson (154).
The Season 9 middleweight tournament quarterfinals will also be featured, as tournament veterans Giva Santana (185.5) and Brian Rogers (185) toe the line against Jason Butcher (184.5) and Mikkel Parlo (185). The other half of the bracket will see Brennan Ward (185.25) take on Justin Torrey (185), while Jeremy Kimball (186) meets Perry Filkins (186). Torrey was initially supposed to take on Andreas Spang, but, like Warren, “The Sweet Swede” was deemed ineligible to compete by the Mohegan Tribe commission.
