A solid welterweight bout has been added to the UFC’s upcoming debut in the Netherlands.
Albert Tumenov (17-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) is slated to meet Gunnar Nelson (14-2-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 87 in May, UFC officials today announced.
UFC Fight Night 87 takes place May 8 at Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The card is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
Tumenov is No. 15 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, and Nelson recently fell out of the top 15.
Since a UFC-debut loss to Ildemar Alcantara via split decision in early 2014, Tumenov has posted a five-fight UFC winning streak with three knockouts. Most recently, the 24-year-old Balkar fighter followed up a “Performance of the Night” head-kick knockout of Alan Jouban with a split-decision victory over fellow rising contender Lorenz Larkin.
He now meets Nelson, who opened his career with a 13-0-1 mark that included a perfect 4-0 start. However, the 27-year-old Icelandic submission specialist is just 1-2 since then with decision losses to Demian Maia and Rick Story, and a submission victory over Brandon Thatch.
In addition to Tumenov vs. Nelson, a recently rumored bout between welterweights Peter Sobotta (15-5-1 MMA, 2-4 UFC) and Dominic Waters (9-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) was also recently made official for the card.
