TORONTO – As if the true stakes of tonight’s title fight weren’t confusing enough, they got a whole lot murkier in the lead-up to UFC 206.
Tonight’s pay-per-view event takes place at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, and in the latest edition of “On the Ground,” we look back on fight week and the path that led us to a headliner that’s now just half a title fight.
During Friday’s early and official weigh-ins, Max Holloway (16-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) and Anthony Pettis (19-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC) hit the scale ahead of a fight for the interim featherweight title – one recently held by Jose Aldo, who was promoted to undisputed champ when former two-division champ Conor McGregor was stripped of the 145-pound belt. Holloway weighed 145 pounds, but Pettis tipped the scale at 148 pounds – three pounds over the 145-pound limit for featherweight title fights.
Although Holloway is still eligible to win the belt if victorious, it’s a non-title affair for Pettis, who received a number of boos at Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins.
In the above video, we look back at the weigh-in fiasco and other hot topics, including a growing rivalry between welterweight co-headliners Matt Brown (20-15 MMA, 13-9 UFC) and Donald Cerrone (31-7 MMA, 18-4 UFC).
