Video: UFC champ Ronda Rousey and trainer not discussing mom's criticism

GLENDALE, Calif. – Ronda Rousey’s mom caused a bit of a stir with recent criticism of the UFC champion’s trainer, but all parties are opting to keep the matter private.

During Tuesday’s UFC 193 media day ahead of her upcoming title fight, Rousey and her trainer, Edmond Tarverdyan, all declined to comment on Dr. AnnMaria De Mars’ recent interview.

“I think Edmond is a terrible coach, and I will say it publicly,” De Mars, a world champion judoka, said earlier this month. “I think he’s a terrible coach. I think he hit the lottery when Ronda walked in there.”

Rousey, who won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Olympic Games, was already successful in combat sports when she started training with Tarverdyan at Glendale Fighting Club in Glendale, Calif., her mom said, and the coach hasn’t done much to further her success.

“She was winning before she ever met him,” De Mars said. “She probably won 99 percent of the judo matches she ever fought in. She’d won the Junior Worlds when she was 17. She got a bronze medal in the Olympics. She got a silver medal in the world championships. She was one of the top athletes in the world when she walked in there, and he wouldn’t even give her the time of day for months. Somebody like that is a terrible coach.”

When asked for a response, Tarverdyan said he’s “not going to answer any questions” and would never speak badly about someone’s mother.

Rousey, too, didn’t want to comment.

“Any reaction and response I have for my mother, she’s going to hear it from me and not a media outlet,” she said.

Up next for Rousey (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) is the UFC 193 pay-per-view headliner against Holly Holm (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), which takes place Nov. 14 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. The dominant champ, who’s ranked 1 in the NOS Energy Drink MMA women’s bantamweight rankings, looks for her seventh consecutive title defense.
