Video: UFC 169's Ricardo Lamas not buying into underdog status

NEW YORK – It’s safe to say that Ricardo Lamas doesn’t believe in “MMA math.”

Really, when it comes to numbers, Lamas (13-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) doesn’t care much at all – especially when it comes to the odds against him when he fights Jose Aldo (23-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) on Saturday at UFC 169.

“This isn’t a math equation, know what I mean? They don’t factor in heart and will into fights,” Lamas told MMAjunkie. “We’re going in there to punch each other in the face, not do a long-division problem. I think the odds are way off. Every fight, the odds should be 50-50, in my head, because anybody can win in a fight.”

And that, of course, is true. But it hasn’t stopped oddsmakers from making Aldo a favorite of as much as 7-1 – far from the 50-50 Lamas sees it as.

Aldo, the Brazilian featherweight champion, hasn’t lost in eight years. He defends his title against Lamas in the UFC 169 co-main event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The main card airs on pay-per-view after prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
