NEW ORLEANS – Shawn Jordan’s flashy high kick may have looked a little bit lucky, but it was actually all by design. In fact, “The Savage” was practicing the move at Thursday’s pre-UFC Fight Night 68 open workout session.
Jordan (18-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC) used the flashy kick to wobble UFC Fight Night 68 opponent Derrick Lewis (12-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC), and he would follow up with punches to seal the second-round TKO finish at Saturday’s event, which took place at New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center.
At the night’s post-event press conference, Jordan said he pulled out the move as a counter to Lewis’ own spinning kick, which he threw in the opening round.
“You see, first he threw his ninja kick, so then I had to bring back my Shawn Michaels super kick,” Jordan joked. “I don’t know. It just kind of happened. It was just timing, I guess.”
While Lewis’ kick missed, Jordan’s didn’t, and the effort earned him a $50,000 bonus for of the evening’s two “Performance of the Night” awards.
