It was a UFC lightweight title fight, so there was a pretty good chance it was going to be closely contested.

And sure enough, it was. Benson Henderson (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) retained his 155-pound title with a split-decision win over Gilbert Melendez (21-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), a decision many in the crowd seemed to disagree with.

Henderson went the five-round distance for the fourth straight time and defended his title for the third straight time, and Melendez lost for the first time in nearly five years.

The lightweight title bout was the main event of Saturday’s UFC on FOX 7 card at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The main card aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook.
