UFC debuts on FOX Sports 1 Aug. 17 at TD Bank in Boston

UFC President Dana White, a Boston-area native, on Friday announced the promotion will return to his home city in August for the debut event on FOX Sports 1.

UFC officials told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that an official name for the event is still to be determined, but the first UFC on FOX Sports 1 event will take place Aug. 17 at TD Garden.

Though no fights have been announced for the show, White implied on Twitter the promotion has big plans: “We are bringing a sick card,” he stated.

The UFC made its first visit to Boston in August 2010 for UFC 118, a pay-per-view that featured the lightweight title rematch between then-champ Frankie Edgar and former champ B.J. Penn. That card also was accompanied by a UFC Fan Expo, the first and so far only of those events to take place on the East Coast.

UFC 118, which also took place at TD Garden, the home of the NBA’s Boston Celtics and NHL’s Boston Bruins, drew 14,168 fans for a gate of $2.8 million. The card also featured UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture against former pro boxer James Toney, as well as a decidedly New England flavor, including Massachusetts natives Joe Lauzon and Kenny Florian and Maine native Marcus Davis.

August will be a busy month for the UFC. UFC 163 in Rio is scheduled for Aug. 3. The debut UFC on FOX Sports 1 show takes place Aug. 17, and two weeks later, UFC 164 is booked for Milwaukee.
