Bellator MMA crowned a pair of tournament winners on Thursday night and set up two more title fights for later this year.
Emanuel Newton (21-7-1 MMA, 4-1 BFC) picked up a unanimous decision win over Mikhail Zayats (21-7 MMA, 2-1 BFC) to win the Season 8 light heavyweight tournament, and in doing so, he also earned a rematch with light heavyweight champion Attila Vegh, who beat him this past July in a tournament semifinal fight.
In the co-main event, David Rickels (14-1 MMA, 8-1 BFC) took the lightweight tournament title after a TKO win over Saad Awad (14-5 MMA, 2-1 BFC) that came right at the bell in the second round. Rickels moves on to a title fight against champ Michael Chandler.
Also on the main card, Luis Melo (29-11-3 MMA, 1-0 BFC) submitted Trey Houston (10-2 MMA, 1-2 BFC) to book a spot in the next welterweight tournament, and Rodrigo Lima (11-1 MMA, 1-1 BFC) had little trouble with Ronnie Mann (21-6-1 MMA, 3-3 BFC), sweeping the judges’ scorecards to earn a bantamweight tournament spot.
Bellator 94 took place at USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. The evening’s main card aired on Spike TV following prelims on Bellator.com.
