The fighter’s manager, Eduardo Alonso, informed UFC Tonight that his client has a condition called Osteomyelitis, which was found in his right clavicle bone and forced the former middleweight title contender into hospitalization for a number of days.

Maia was scheduled to fight Mike Pyle last Saturday UFC Fight Night Tulsa, but he had to withdraw from the bout due to a staph infection. Leading into last weekend, the fighter’s conditioned worsened and he was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, according to the report.

Upon his release from hospitalization on Friday, Maia was prescribed antibiotics to treat the condition, which he will have to take for six weeks, according to UFC Tonight.

Doctors will reassess Maia’s condition upon completion of his antibiotic treatment, leaving a timeline to return to fighting unknown at this time.

Osteomyelitis is condition defined as an infection of the bone, according to the Mayo Clinic. The infection can reach the bone by spreading from nearby tissue, or it can begin in the bone if the bone is exposed to germs.
