UFC Fight Night 99 results: Kevin Lee submits Magomed Mustafaev, calls out division

BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Kevin Lee choked out Magomed Mustafaev – and then called out basically the entire lightweight division.

Lee (14-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) used a steady stream of takedowns and submission attempts to eventually choke Mustafaev (13-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) unconscious.

The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 99 event at SSE Arena Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The entire event streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

Lee worked for takedowns in the first round, but Mustafaev made him pay with knees, a nearly successful guillotine choke, body kicks and a spinning elbow that just missed its mark. But once Lee survived those shots and got the fight to the mat, he was in control, which included a rear-naked choke that was cut short by the end of the first round.

Although Lee again got the fight to the mat in the second round, Mustafaev initially escaped and made him pay once back up. The problem, though, is he couldn’t stay there, and Lee would quickly take him back down to deliver punches and submission attempts from dominant ground positions.

Ultimately, late in the second round, Lee finally shut down the escapes and secured a fight-ending rear-naked choke that put Mustafaev to sleep.

The stoppage came at the 4:31 mark of the second round.

After the bout, Lee, who’s now won three straight and seven of eight, complained about other lightweights ducking him and had a message for them.

Mustafaev, meanwhile, suffered his first UFC loss and snapped an overall 13-fight winning streak.
