BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Don’t call Justin Ledet “just” a boxer.
Ledet (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) landed some nice strikes, but he ultimately relied on scrambles and a submission to tap out promotional newcomer Mark Godbeer (11-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC).
The heavyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 99 event at SSE Arena Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The entire event streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
The two strikers traded shots early, but Ledet was sneaking in the better punches. Then, he saw an opening for a takedown – according to Ledet, it was the first of his career – and though Godbeer briefly got up, Ledet sent him right back to the canvas.
After a scramble, Ledet took his back, secured a rear-naked choke, torqued it, and ultimately got the tap-out.
The stoppage came at the 2:16 mark of the first round.
Ledet, who earned a decision victory over Chase Sherman in his UFC debut, now has seven stoppages in eight career wins. Godbeer, who fought for Bellator and BAMMA before signing with the UFC, snapped a three-fight winning streak.
