BARUERI, Brazil – Heading into the final minute of the first round, Vitor Miranda seemed like a fighter on his way to giving up an early lead on the scorecards after Jake Collier dominated the action for almost the entirety of the round.

But one head kick by Miranda (10-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was all it took to turn things around, sending Collier 8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) spiraling toward the mat as Miranda followed up with a few more punches to seal the TKO victory just before the horn and bringing an end to the fight at 4:59 of Round 1.

The middleweight preliminary-card bout opened today’s UFC Fight Night 58 event at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional bouts on FOX Sports 1.

Collier showed no signs of UFC jitters early on in his octagon debut. The American got off to a quick start, getting Miranda down to the mat and dominating him from the top before nearly locking up a d’arce choke that seemed to have Miranda worried.

But Miranda kept his wits about him and defended well, eventually using the submission attempt as an opportunity to get back to his feet. Once there, he fooled Collier with a kick that started low and came up high, thwacking Collier across the side of the head and making his legs go wobbly on impact. Miranda knew what to do from there, and soon he was wading in with punches as Collier covered up and crashed to the mat, forcing referee Fernando Yamasaki to call a stop to it with just one second left before the end of the round.

“He knocked me down, but I was able to feel that he was struggling to keep on the ground,” Miranda said. “I realized I had to move so that I could gain a few points in the round. I needed this win. Now I feel like a UFC fighter, ready for a new chapter in my career.”

“I’m disappointed,” Collier said. “I have to watch the video. I thought I had that choke, but he got out. I didn’t see the kick coming.”

With the win, Miranda bounces back from a defeat his own UFC debut, getting his first victory inside the octagon. Collier’s loss snaps a five-fight winning streak outside the UFC.
