UFC Fight Night 44 post-fight facts: Borg scores fastest submission in flyweight history

San Antonio’s AT&T Center played host to the second UFC event in a 24-hour stretch on Saturday with UFC Fight Night 44.

The FOX Sports 1-televised fight card featured 11 bouts, and in the main event, Cub Swanson (21-7 MMA, 6-1 UFC) outpointed fellow featherweight contender Jeremy Stephens (23-10 MMA, 10-9 UFC) over five rounds en route to a unanimous-decision victory.

Swanson’s win marked the sixth consecutive decision on the main card after preliminary-card results saw four of five fights end inside the distance..

Saturday’s event produced a wide range of results, from the quickest submission in flyweight history to the fastest submission by a debuting lightweight to a rare 4-0 UFC for a winner of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

GENERAL

Swanson, Stephens, Ray Borg and Carlos Diego Ferreira earned $50,000 UFC Fight Night 44 fight-night bonuses.

UFC Fight Night 44 drew an announced attendance of 9,227 for a live gate of $728,358.

Betting favorites went 9-2 on the card.

Total fight time for the 11-bout card was 2:00:51.

MAIN CARD

Swanson’s six-fight UFC winning streak is tied with champion Jose Aldo and Dennis Bermudez for the longest active one in the featherweight division.

Swanson registered the 10th victory of his UFC/WEC featherweight career, the third most in divisional history behind Jose Aldo (14) and Chad Mendes (11).

Swanson’s 87 significant strikes landed against Stephens give him a total of 504 in his UFC/WEC featherweight career. That’s the second most in divisional history behind Aldo (589).

Swanson was awarded the seventh fight-night bonus of his UFC/WEC career. That ties Urijah Faber for the most of any featherweight fighter in the combined history of the two organizations.

Stephens suffered his first loss in four fights since dropping to the UFC featherweight division.

Stephens fell to 3-4 in his past seven UFC appearances.

Kelvin Gastelum (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) became the first “TUF” winner to start his UFC career with a 4-0 record since “TUF 8” champion Ryan Bader.

Gastelum became the first UFC fighter this year to win a bout after missing weight.

Gastelum has earned three of his four UFC victories by decision.

Cezar Ferreira (8-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has earned three of his four UFC victories by decision.

Andrew Craig (9-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) dropped his second fight in a row and is now on the first two-fight drought of his career. “Highlight” is just 1-3 in his past four UFC appearances.

Ricardo Lamas (14-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) became the seventh fighter in UFC history to earn five featherweight victories.

Lamas improved to 6-1 in UFC/WEC competition when he lands at least one takedown against his opponent. The lone defeat in that column came to Aldo.

Hacran Dias (21-3-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has suffered all three of his career losses by decision.

Clint Hester’s (11-3 MMA, 4-0 UFC) four-fight UFC winning streak is tied with Vitor Belfort and Yoel Romero for the second longest one in the middleweight division behind champion Chris Weidman (seven).

Hester has earned all four of his UFC victories by a different method.

Antonio Braga Neto (9-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) suffered his first defeat since March 2008.

Joe Ellenberger (15-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) failed to finish an opponent for just the third time in his career.

James Moontasri (7-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) has suffered both of his career losses by decision.

PRELIMINARY CARD

Carlos Diego Ferreira’s (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) submission victory at the 0:38 mark of Round 1 marked the fastest submission by a debuting UFC lightweight. Charles Oliveira held the previous record with his 41-second finish of Darren Elkins at UFC on VERSUS 2.

Colton Smith (3-4 MMA, 1-3 UFC) is the first “TUF” winner to suffer three consecutive losses after winning the reality-show tournament.

Smith fell to 1-4 in his past five fights.

Smith has been finished in all three of his UFC losses.

Johnny Bedford (19-11-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) is winless in his past three UFC appearances.

Bedford has suffered all 11 of his career losses by stoppage.

Marcelo Guimaraes (9-1-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has earned both of his UFC victories by split decision.

Borg (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has earned five of his seven professional victories by submission.

Borg’s submission victory at the 2:17 mark of Round 1 marked the fastest submission finish in UFC flyweight history.

Shane Howell (13-8 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffered a submission loss for the first time since June 25, 2010 – a span of 1,464 days (more than four years) and seven fights. Howell has suffered five of his eight career losses by submission.

Alexey Oleinik (49-9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who’s won 10 straight fights, has earned his past 11 victories by stoppage.

Oleinik, who defeated the likes of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Jeff Monson to earn a UFC contract, has earned 40 of his 49 professional victories by submission. Of those stoppages, 34 have come in the first round.
