ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Despite a spirited effort early on from Yves Edwards (42-21-1 MMA, 10-9 UFC), the relentless pressure of Piotr Hallmann (15-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) eventually won the day.
Hallman wore down Edwards in the third frame to secure a quick tap-out when the fight spilled to the mat.
The lightweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 42 event at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, N.M. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The official time of the bout’s stoppage came at the 2:31 mark of the third round, when Edwards failed to protect his neck in transition and Hallman cinched a rear-naked choke on the mat.
Hallman stayed in Edwards’ face from the opening bell, lunging with knees and trading punches (and landing a few eye-pokes) despite a disadvantage on his feet, where the veteran expertly picked angles to win exchanges.
In the second round, however, Hallman’s pace began to wear on Edwards as he defended takedowns and righted himself after trips to the mat.
By the third frame, Edwards’ exhaustion compromised his ability to defend himself when Hallman dragged him to the mat and snaked his way to the back for the choke.
Edwards now has lost four in a row inside the octagon, though a previous loss to Yancy Medeiros was overturned when Medeiros tested positive for a banned substance. Hallman, meanwhile, is a winner once again after a decision loss to Al Iaquinta this past fall.
