Robert Whittaker had to weather a big storm from Derek Brunson early in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 101 meeting, but once he survived, he took over and finished the fight.
The middleweight bout was the main event of the UFC Fight Night 101 event at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It aired on FS1 following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Brunson (16-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC) had Whittaker (17-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) on the ropes early, landing heavy punches as the New Zealander covered up against the cage. But when he couldn’t finish, Brunson got reckless and charged chin first into a big punch from Whittaker that flipped the fight around.
Whittaker threw punches and a big head kick to keep Bruson on the ropes before pouring on the offense and getting the stoppage at the 4:07 mark of Round 1.
