UFC Champ Cain Velasquez Has Successful Shoulder Surgery

Cain Velasquez UFC World TourUFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez had successful surgery on his injured shoulder, the fighter revealed on Wednesday.

Velasquez took to social media to update everyone about the procedure and how he’s looking forward to his Octagon comeback.

“My shoulder surgery yesterday went well,” Velasquez wrote in a post on Instagram. “Can’t wait to be back at it.”

Following his UFC 166 win over Junior dos Santos, news surfaced that Velasquez had problems with his shoulder and ultimately had an MRI done to determine if surgery was the best course of action. MMAWeekly.com sources in November said Velasquez would likely be able to avoid surgery and rehabilitate without an invasive procedure.

Ultimately, surgery became necessary and Velasquez completed the procedure on Tuesday. A timeline for his recovery and return to fighting is uncertain at this time.

MMAWeekly.com reached out to Velasquez’s representative for comment, but messages were not returned at the time of publication.

Awaiting Velasquez’s return to fighting will be Fabricio Werdum, as he has been deemed the next in line for a title shot by UFC president Dana White. A date for that fight is unclear and dependent on Velasquez’s recovery time, but the hope is to have the fight be the promotion’s first live event in Mexico.
