UFC 197 bonuses: Any surprise that Yair Rodriguez head kick was worth $50,000?

LAS VEGAS – Yair Rodriguez, Demetrious Johnson, Danny Roberts and Dominique Steele each earned $50,000 fight-night bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 197 event.

Rodriguez and Johnson earned “Performance of the Night” bonuses, and Roberts and Steele took home “Fight of the Night” honors.

UFC President Dana White announced the winners at the post-event press conference, which MMAjunkie attended.

Rodriguez (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) was having a fairly easy time against Andre Fili (15-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) in their featherweight bout to open the main card. But when he stung Fili with a punch and Fili reached for his eye, Rodriguez took advantage. He landed a massive kick to the head that had Fili out cold without a need for any follow-up shots.

Johnson (24-2-1 MMA, 12-1-1 UFC) defended his flyweight title with a quick first-round TKO of Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in the co-main event. Johnson hurt Cejudo and wobbled him with a knee, then went right after him with a punch, more knees, and a finish on the ground.

Roberts (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Steele (14-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) slung leather for 15 minutes, and Roberts walked away with a trio of close 29-28 scores and the decision win in their welterweight fight.

UFC 197 took place Saturday at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
