UFC 182 results: Cody Garbrandt impresses in debut, stops Marcus Brimage

LAS VEGAS – Marcus Brimage refused to concede a disadvantage in speed and accuracy against UFC newcomer Cody Garbrandt. While it helped him gain back some ground, it ultimately led to his downfall.

Brimage (7-4 MMA, 4-3 UFC) walked into a well-timed right hand from Garbrandt (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), the newest protege of Team Alpha Male, and was out on his feet before punches finished him.

The bantamweight fight was part of today’s UFC 182 event at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following earlier prelims on UFC Fight Pass and prior to the pay-per-view main card.

The official end came at the 4:50 mark of the third frame as Brimage was knocked to the canvas. The fight could have been stopped moments earlier – and referee Herb Dean looked as though he was close to waving off the bout – as Brimage’s legs gave out amid a flurry of punches from Garbrandt.

The UFC newcomer, who extended his unbeaten streak to six, showed a deft touch in timing punches inside as Brimage rushed to engage. After the fight, Garbrandt reported suffering a broken hand.

Brimage was hurt badly in the first round from a combination and looked as though he was close to being finished, but the bell saved him. The sequence motivated him to go after Garbrandt early in the second, and he landed several hard punches with a flurry. But Garbrandt reasserted control and even began to toy with him in later exchanges.

Since dropping to bantamweight, Brimage, a veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 14,” is 1-2 in the UFC’s octagon and is 1-3 in his past four outings.
