UFC 169 results, photos: Neil Magny outstrikes Gasan Umalatov for decision win

NEWARK, N.J. – Neil Magny came in with a size and reach advantage over UFC newcomer Gasan Umalatov, and he put both to good use in a one-sided affair that resulted in a unanimous decision win (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).

The welterweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC 169 event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FOX Sports 1 and a main card on pay-per-view.

From the opening seconds of the fight, it was clear that Magny’s reach would be a factor. He peppered Umalatov with straight punches and low kicks in the early going, all while remaining comfortably outside his opponent’s grasp. After giving up an early takedown that Umalatov couldn’t capitalize on, Magny also rebounded to control the grappling portions of the fight as well, taking Umalatov’s back at the ends of Rounds 1 and 2.

In the end, it was an easy call for the judges, all of whom gave it to Magny. When asked by UFC color commentator Joe Rogan to account for the improvement he showed in this fight after two previous losses in the UFC, Magny attributed it to mental improvement.

“I lost to opponents I know I can beat because of mental mistakes on my part,” Magny said. “So I’m just going to keep getting mentally stronger, physically stronger, push as hard as I could.”

Magny (9-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) snaps a two-fight losing streak with the victory. Umalatov (14-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) falls in his UFC debut, his first loss since June of 2012.
