UFC's Melvin Guillard leaving Blackzilians, returning to Team Jackson-Winkeljohn

melvin-guillard-22.jpgVeteran UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard is leaving his current camp and returning to his former one.

Guillard announced via Twitter he’s leaving the Florida-based “Blackzilians” team at Jaco Hybrid Training Center and returning to Team Jackson-Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, N.M.

“Im no longer a blackzillian I went back to where I belong Jackson’s,” tweeted Guillard, who followed the message with five consecutive smiley emoticons.

Guillard (30-12-2 MMA, 11-8 UFC), 29, moved into title contention in 2011 after winning eight of nine fights, including four via knockout. However, he’s since posted a 1-4 record with losses to notables Donald Cerrone, Jamie Varner, Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon.

Guillard, who found his way to the UFC after appearing on “The Ultimate Fighter 2? in 2005, joined the upstart Blackzilians camps in 2011. The team, which includes many former American Top Team members, features a collection of big-name talent, including Rashad Evans, Alistair Overeem, Vitor Belfort, Matt Mitrione and others.

Guillard first hooked up with trainer Greg Jackson in 2009, and as he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) at the time, it took his skills to a whole new level. But in 2011 he began to split his time between the Jackson camp and the Blackzilians. He made a full-time move to Florida later in the year.

Although the Blackzilians have come under the fire in recent months following losses by some of the camp’s bigger names, the team went 2-1 at this past weekend’s WSOF 2 event following victories by headliner Anthony Johnson and Danillo Villefort.

Guillard, who’s still under contract with the UFC, hasn’t been booked for his next fight.
