This is why 'King Mo' Lawal is going silent on Bellator-tournament talk

Muhammed Lawal is part of Bellator MMA’s upcoming four-man single-night tournament, and it’s a star-studded field. So why is “King Mo” planning to stay silent in the buildup to it?

According to the former Strikeforce champion, he’s doesn’t want to spend the next three months answering the same questions and talking about the same subjects.

“The thing is, what are they going to ask me? The same questions you’re all going to ask me now?” Lawal told MMAjunkie during this past weekend’s Bellator 138 event, where Bellator 141 and the light-heavyweight tournament field were announced. “If people want, they can just paste and copy my quotes.”

Joining Lawal (15-4-1 MMA, 7-3 BMMA) in the competitive field are former UFC contender Phil Davis (13-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), ex-Bellator champion Emanuel Newton (25-8-1 MMA, 8-2 BMMA) and recent Bellator title challenger Linton Vassell (15-4 MMA, 4-1 BMMA). The winner of the tourney, which takes place Sept. 19 and airs on Spike TV from SAP Center in San Jose, will then fight reigning champ Liam McGeary (10-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) or UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz (18-11-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA), who headline the show, at a later date.

But with the uncertain nature of the tourney, Lawal said he’s got little to say.

“As far as the tournament, there’s nothing to talk about,” he said. “I won’t know what’s going on until weigh-ins – because we don’t know who’s fighting who. We don’t know nothing.

“I’m down to fight whoever, whenever, whatever. I don’t care how long it is. I won’t know things until weigh-ins because weigh-ins is when they’ll determine who fights who, I bet.”

Despite his initial reluctance, Lawal eventually broke down the tournament field, gave his pick for McGeary vs. Ortiz, discusses his beef with Quinton Jackson and more.
