Thiago Alves’ first attempt at fighting as a UFC lightweight didn’t just end in a loss. He’s now picked up an additional suspension.
The New York State Athletic Commission has benched Alves (21-11 MMA, 13-8 UFC) for three months after he missed weight for a bout against Jim Miller (28-8 MMA, 17-7 UFC) at UFC 205, a commission rep today confirmed to MMAjunkie following a tweet from ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto.
Alves wound up facing Miller in a 162.6-pound catchweight bout for the Nov. 12 pay-per-view event at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He fell short via unanimous decision in the UFC Fight Pass-streamed bout.
UFC fighters aren’t usually suspended for missing weight, but New York’s commission has shown a willingness to take a hard stance on regulatory issues, denying Rashad Evans a license to fight Tim Kennedy after evaluating his medical paperwork. The commission also mandated each fighter be insured for $1 million against traumatic brain injury.
Alves was attempting his first fight at 155 pounds after a career at welterweight, where he once challenged for the title against now-former champ Georges St-Pierre. In the buildup to his debut, he talked up his transformation with nutrition guru Mike Dolce. But the two split in the weeks prior to UFC 205.
During his time as a welterweight, Alves twice missed weight. He was once suspended after testing positive for a banned diuretic.
Alves is now 4-5 since his title shot against St-Pierre. The Brazilian is no stranger to layoffs; he’s spent extended periods of time on the sidelines due to injuries. He’ll wait a little bit longer to come back after his troubles with the scale.
