Strikeforce Overeem vs. Werdum Play-by-Play: KJ Noons vs. Jorge Masvidal

Round 1: Noons is fast out of the gate, rushing across the cage at Masvidal, pressing him around the cage. Masvidal though just missing with a jumping knee. Noons is putting his pro boxing skills to use, landing frequent punches and dictating where the fight goes. Masvidal not giving much ground, firing back with single punches, and then scoring a double-leg takedown. Masvidal lands on top, Noons on his side, but Noons has Masvidal’s right arm locked up in a Kimura hold. Masvidal slips his arm out and they’re quickly up to their feet. Masvidal landing well with his jab, but Noons is working the body well with punches. Noons though has a cut, which appears to be up around his scalp line. Masvidal seems to be feeding off the blood, landing more stinging punches and low kicks. Noons leans in and eats a kick to the face, going down hard. Masvidal follows him down and unleashes, but Noons somehow survives the flurry and makes it out of the round. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-8 for Masvidal.

Round 2: Noons comes out firing at the body, his calling card. Masvidal is countering with low kicks. Noons’ forehead has started bleeding heavily again. They exchange a couple strikes, but Masvidal scores another takedown. Noons is right back to his feet and lands left hook to the body and again to the head. Masvidal though puts Noons on his back again and starts ground and pounding from full guard. Noons tries desperately to kick him off, but Masvidal stays on him. Noons scoots to the fence and walks up the fence to his feet. Noons ups the ante, throwing lots of punches and knees, but Masvidal is doing well with his counters. Masvidal again takes Noons to the mat and lands a few punches, but Noons gets out and up with Masvidal still on the mat. Noons lands a few punches of his own before Masvidal regains his feet and lands another knee to Noons’ face, rocking him backwards. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Masvidal.

Round 3: Noons, not giving up, starts off round three headhunting. Noons going back to the body, but trying to set up the big overhand right with it, stalking Masvidal around the cage, landing several combinations. Masvidal is hanging back, taking a few shots, trying to find an opening for a counter. Noons is landing a lot of punches, but not amassing much damage. Masvidal then puts Noons down again. Noons is right back up, but Masvidal again puts him on the mat, landing in side mount with one of Noons’ arms tied up. Masvidal lands a few punches and hangs on to Noons’ right leg, keeping him on the mat. MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 and the fight 30-26 for Masvidal.
