Sometimes You Gotta Win Ugly, but It Paid Off for Brock Larson at One FC 8

Brock Larson UFC FN 18All fights can’t end with a highlight reel finish. Sometimes you’ve got to win ugly. And that’s exactly what Brock Larson did in his unanimous decision victory over Melvin Manheof at One FC 8 on April 5.

“I think I did what I had to do to win,” said Larson. “Manheof is of course a scary individual on the feet, so I knew I had to take my time and be patient and wait for the opportunity to present itself to get my takedowns.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be able to do it by standing and trading with him, so I took my time, got my takedowns and won the fight.”

Perhaps fighting up a weight class contributed to how Larson approached the fight. But as Larson told MMAWeekly.com, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

“That’s basically it, they offered the fight there and if I took that fight they’d give me a multi-fight deal, so I took the deal and ended up winning and now I’m hanging out with the One FC, which is a phenomenal organization and a lot of fun,” he said.

While it wasn’t his prettiest performance, the win over Manheof gives Larson four wins in a row. It’s a winning streak he contributes to changing camps after several years at the Minnesota MMA Academy.

“I’m training at American Top Team now, which is a phenomenal gym, and it’s a change of scenery a little bit,” he said.

“I get a little bit more focus on me, whereas the last four years I’ve been running gyms and teaching. Now I’m doing fight camps like I used to do and I’ve got my fire back by focusing more on myself and it’s turning out good.”

With a new promotion, a new team and a rejuvenated outlook on fighting, Larson’s goal for the remainder of 2013 is as straightforward as it gets.

“I want to keep plugging away, keep getting wins, go back to 170 pounds and go after that One FC title.”
