Ronda Rousey Files to Trademark 'Do Nothing B---h' Catchphrase

Ronda Rousey Files to Trademark 'Do Nothing B---h' Catchphrase

UFC superstar Ronda Rousey has reportedly filed to trademark her “Do Nothing B---h” catchphrase and its shortened version, “DNB,” according to ESPN.com's Darren Rovell.

The women's bantamweight champion is set to fight Holly Holm on January 2 at UFC 195, per her own Twitter account. She has been using the catchphrase to sell t-shirts and other apparel through her website, and a trademark filing was the logical next step. Proceeds of the sale will be going to charity.

According to Rovell, Rousey explained what the term meant during an episode of UFC Embedded, saying it's a woman who "tries to be pretty and be taken care of by someone else." She added she's nothing like that, saying "there's not a single muscle on my body that isn't for a purpose."

Rovell expanded on the news, reporting this isn't the first time Rousey's company Rowdy Ronda Inc. has filed for trademarks. Other examples are the terms “Armbarnation” and “Rowdy Ronda Rousey.”

The “Do Nothing B---h” catchphrase has spread rapidly through social media, garnering plenty of attention, both positive and negative. Lots of fans have drawn inspiration from the term and its meaning, but others aren't so happy with the way the slogan is worded, per CNN's New Day:

The catchphrase works as a personal form of motivation for Rousey. Given her perfect 12-0 record and the fact her last three fights lasted less than 65 seconds combined, per Rovell, it's safe to say it's working.

Many fans and pundits thought Rousey was in line for another rematch with Miesha Tate following her demolition of Bethe Correia, and the announcement she'd instead be fighting Holm came as a bit of a shock. Jonathan Snowden of Bleacher Report didn't understand the confusion and mild disappointment:

Former boxer Holm presents a new kind of challenge, as an elite striker with excellent footwork who can control a fight by keeping her distance and being patient. Like Rousey, she's undefeated in her MMA career, and she impressed greatly in her win over veteran Marion Reneau.

Despite that, Rousey's coach Edmond Tarverdyan is convinced the defending champion can more than hold her own in a boxing match with Holm, via MMA Fighting (h/t Sports Illustrated):

"Ronda beats Holly in a boxing match. I don’t believe it—I know so. And I believe in my fighter a lot. ... We have her sparring with boxing world champions in the gym. I’ve never seen Ronda lose a single round."

Rousey will?and should?be the overwhelming favourite going into the bout, and it will be interesting to see whether the “DNB” catchphrase features even more prominently in the lead-up to her fight with Holm early next year.
