Rick Story is one of the more underrated fighters in the UFC’s welterweight ranks… at least from the outside looking in.
That designation may not stick with him much longer after Saturday night, however.
Everyone expected Story’s fight with Thiago Alves at UFC 130 to be a “Fight of the Night” competitor. It didn’t win the honor, but had to have been in the running.
Regardless, Story debunked his underdog status and took the fight to Alves from the opening bell. He proved the naysayers wrong, showing that he had the strength and the technique to not only hang with Alves, but to walk away with a unanimous decision victory.
Alves was ranked No. 4 in the welterweight class prior to the fight, and now, with the win, Story is calling for another Top 10 fighter in Jon Fitch.
There’s no science to it says Story, “He’s the next person up on the list.” And he’s also in the way of Story getting to his ultimate goal, a title shot against Georges St-Pierre.
