Report: UFC Fight Night 29 set for Oct. 9 in Brazil, Silva-Kim added

erick-silva-8.jpgAs promised, the UFC is making trips to Brazil a regular thing.

The promotion will venture back to the MMA hotbed in October for UFC Fight Night 29. Sources close to the event recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the UFC would touch down in Brazil in October. And though the event has yet to be announced by the company, Brazilian news outlet Combate has reported the location as a done deal.

UFC Fight Night 29 reportedly will take place at Ginasio Poliesportivo Jose Correa in the city of Barueri, just outside Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city. The event’s main card is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on Facebook.

MMAjunkie.com earlier today reported that a welterweight fight between jiu-jitsu experts Demian Maia (18-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and Jake Shields (28-6-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC)), a fight previously reported here, was set to be the card’s main event.

In addition, Combate in July reported a welterweight bout between Erick Silva (15-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Dong Hyun Kim (17-2-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) will be on the card, and MMA Fighting reported that bout will serve as the co-main event.

The October show will be the UFC’s sixth in Brazil this calendar year – with a seventh event not yet announced, but rumored for November. The promotion had three events in Brazil in 2012 and just one in 2011, which was its first trip back to the country since 1998.

The UFC opened up 2013 with a show in Sao Paulo in January, then in May went to Jaragua do Sul. Both of those events were on FX, headlined by Brazilian standout Vitor Belfort – and both resulted in head-kick knockout wins.

In June, the UFC continued its stretch of doing smaller free TV shows in the country with UFC on FUEL TV 10 in Fortaleza. In August, UFC 163 hit Rio de Janeiro. And in three weeks, UFC Fight Night 28 will take place in Belo Horizonte.

Silva will fight in his home country for the third straight time. In June, he stopped Jason High with a reverse triangle armbar just 71 seconds into the fight for “Submission of the Night.” That got him back on track after a “Fight of the Night” loss to Jon Fitch this past October. He has bounced between wins and losses his entire five-fight UFC career.

Kim will be going after his third straight win. After fighting in the United States for his first nine UFC bouts, he has unanimous decision wins in Macau over Paulo Thiago and Japan over Siyar Bahadurzada on his resume. Now he’ll look to add Brazil to that list.
