ONE FC 10 results: Colossa dominates Boku, Butler stays unbeaten

Kotetsu Boku and Vuyisile Colossa had plenty on the line, only finding out three days ago that they’d be the ONE FC 10 main event.

Through the first five minutes, they were measured, but cautious. But in the second round, Colossa took control in the striking game, using snapping leg kicks and follow-up punches to take Boku out of his game en route to a unanimous decision victory.

“ONE FC 10: Champions and Warriors” took place at Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. The main card streamed as an online pay-per-view following free prelims.

Colossa kicked early, but Boku fired back. The first minute mostly was dancing and feinting. Boku landed a solid right hand as a counter to a Collossa kick, then did the same again seconds later. Boku was headhunting for a giant right hand, and a pair of them just missed. With 90 seconds left, he landed his best right of the round. But it was his occasional right hand and Colossa’s kicks to the legs that dominated the first with neither fighter taking a clear advantage.

The second round was more of the same, and Boku’s left leg started to show some signs of the Colossa leg kicks. Colossa seemed to smell blood in the water a couple minutes into the round, and he tried to put together a good combination that had Boku backing up. A minute later, he found a way to set up the big right leg kick with a 1-2 combination, and he landed his best kick of the fight to the thigh. With 80 seconds left, Colossa landed a good left counter, then a bigger combination right behind it. Another big leg kick nearly took Boku off his feet as he took clear control of the fight in the middle stanza.

Boku tried to take Colossa’s back about two minutes into the third round, but when the fight went to the ground, he was the one taking punishment from Colossa. It didn’t take long for Colossa to get back to his feet to continue picking Boku apart. With 90 seconds left, Colossa pushed Boku to the cage and unleashed a big flurry of punches and knees. Somehow, Boku survived it and walked back to the center of the cage with his hands on his hips. Though Colossa couldn’t get the finish, his final 10 minutes of work were dominant.

“Coming into the fight, I knew Boku was a good striker,” Colossa said. “He’s a good boxer and he has good footwork, so the main thing I looked at was his footwork so I could see his movement and adjust to his strikes. I was looking for the finish, but I realized it was going to be impossible. If I was going to knock him out, the knockout would come by itself.”

Colossa (6-4) snapped a two-fight losing skid and won in ONE FC for the first time in more than two years. Boku (20-9-2) now has lost two straight after being submitted by Shinya Aoki at ONE FC 8 in April.

Latoel returns after four-year layoff for submission win
Vincent Latoel (14-13) showed four years off meant very little to him against Willy Ni (15-8). Ni landed a good right hand early that hit Latoel in the head, but Latoel was clearly the aggressor early and was landing good strikes. He hit Li with a solid knee and sent him to the canvas. And there, he went quickly after a choke. He had a front guillotine choke that looked like it might be close. But he needed to adjust it, roll over, and from there he was able to finish the choke and get the tap. A clearly upset Ni pounded the cage and pushed away cornerman Melvin Manhoef.

“I wasn’t nervous because I had trained very hard,” Latoel said of his long layoff. “Mentally and physically, I’m very strong now. The four-year layoff was no problem for me. I’m better, stronger, faster – I’m Vincent 2.0.”

Butler stays unbeaten, taps Kouame
Jake Butler (3-0) once again looked impressive in just his third pro MMA bout. The former NCAA Division I wrestler went for a takedown early, but James Kouame (2-2) defended it and tried to keep the fight standing. He landed a knee in tight, but then had to defend Butler’s knees, as well. About a minute in, Butler finally got the takedown he wanted. He went from a single-leg attempt, then scooped Kouame up for a powerful slam. When Kouame popped back up, Butler again slammed him down and took his back. Up against the cage, Butler landed punches as Kouame covered up. But Kouame rolled over and Butler got to full mount. From there, as Kouame tried to adjust, Butler wrapped his left arm around the neck and squeezed for an arm triangle choke win.

“The plan was just to move forward and pressure him and not give him any space,” Butler said. “The idea was get in his face right away, push the pace, get him against the cage and work for the takedown. It was a little slower than I would’ve liked to get the takedown. I’m surprised I was able to get him with that. I’m just going to keep making my game more well-rounded and work on my striking.”

Ngalani, Majid, Pucci get stoppage wins on main card
In the opening fight on the main card, Alain Ngalani (1-0) drilled Mahmoud Hassan (1-2) with a spinning back kick to the temple quickly into the fight. Hassan stumbled backward and hit the canvas, and Ngalani was all over him. It only took a few punches on the ground for the referee to stop things just 31 seconds in. The two heavyweights, both heavy on physique, had barely started to circle to feel each other out when Ngalani landed his kick.

Vincent Majid (1-0) kicked early, but Eugenio Tan (1-2) rocked him with a right hand that sent him to the canvas – though Majid said he mostly lost his balance. But Majid composed himself and latched onto Tan’s arm and torqued with a kimura. The Malaysian was forced to tap 90 seconds into the fight. “It’s really amazing – it’s my first opportunity with ONE FC, and I won in front of my home coutnry. I love Indonesia,” Majid said.

Brazilian Bruno Pucci (3-0) had to eat a few punches from Bashir Ahmad (2-1), but when the fight hit the ground, it was all Pucci. He quickly worked his way to Ahmad’s back, and as Ahmad tried to get to his feet, Pucci wrapped around and dragged the fight back down. Once there, he went after a rear-naked choke. It appeared that he didn’t have it tight enough early, but he kept after it and Ahmad had to tap at the 3:31 mark of the first round. “I did an eight-week camp at Evolve MMA, and I have great coaches and teammates and felt ready for the fight,” Pucci said after winning his ONE FC debut.
