Neil Seery 'disgusted' after UFC Fight Night 99 bout with Ian McCall scrapped, may not attend event

BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Neil Seery is emotionally crushed following the news his scheduled retirement fight against Ian McCall had been scrapped from Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 99 card after “Uncle Creepy” came down with an illness and was unable to weigh in.

Seery (16-12 MMA, 3-3 UFC) said he caught word of McCall’s (13-5-1 MMA, 2-3-1 UFC) troubles just as he was getting on the scale to weigh in for the flyweight fight slated to close the preliminary portion of the UFC Fight Pass-streamed event as SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

“I nearly burst out crying, to tell you the truth,” Seery told MMAjunkie following Friday’s official weigh-ins. “I was so upset. There’s nothing I can do. Me giving out about it and crying isn’t going to change the fact that I’m not fighting tomorrow. I’m going to go home, I’m going to sit down with my wife and basically see what’s next.”

Although Seery, 37, had planned to walk away from the sport after the fight, his career will go on a little bit longer. He said he wouldn’t call it quits under the current circumstances. He wished the best to McCall, who is currently in a local hospital recovering from his illness, and hoped to be rescheduled for another fight as soon as possible.

“One-hundred percent, (I want to fight). I don’t think I’m going to go out like this,” Seery said. “I had a lot of support coming up from Dublin. I had a fantastic training camp, I felt really good, I made the 126 (pounds) like I always do.”

Leading up to UFC Fight Night 99, it was a running joke that something might happen to the bout between McCall and Seery. McCall has had two fights scrapped on the week of the event since July. This latest incident is the third, but the first of the three he’s responsible for. The previous two times, McCall’s opponents dropped out.

It’s a difficult situation for Seery to handle, he said, so much so that the Irish MMA pioneer is unlikely to attend UFC Fight Night 99 because it would be too difficult to witness the event where he was supposed to compete.

“Nothing I say is going to change a thing – it’s disappointing. I’m, disgusted really,” Seery said. “To be honest, I don’t even know if I’m going to go to the show. It’s happened to me before when I fought for a previous promotion. It was the exact same thing, and I stood on the scales and I went to the show and it’s just heartbreaking watching everyone else do that walk. I put a hell of a lot into this. I was offered the fight probably 10 weeks ago and I put everything on hold.”
