Mike Kyle vs. Valentijn Overeem set for CFA 11, AXS TV deal in works

mike-kyle-9.jpgA heavyweight bout between former Strikeforce fighters Mike Kyle (19-9-1) and Valentijn Overeem (32-30) is set for Championship Fighting Alliance’s 11th event, which is slated for May 24 at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

CFA CEO Jorge de la Noval today confirmed the news with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) and added that talks are underway to air the event live on AXS TV.

The event also is expected to feature the semifinals of a women’s featherweight tournament, which features transgender fighter Fallon Fox (2-0). A rep for Fox’s scheduled opponent, Allana Jones (2-1), said a conference call will take place tonight to discuss the status of the bout.

Fox’s license remains under investigation by the Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which oversees the Florida State Boxing Commission. Fox’s transgender status was revealed this past month, though she applied for and received a license as a woman. That license is still active. An April 5 meeting of the FSBC is widely expected to deliver a decision on Fox’s status as a pro fighter in the state, though officials have declined to confirm action will be taken.

Kyle’s most recent appearance came this past January, when he got a long-delayed fight against light heavyweight Gegard Mousasi. The fight ended quickly with Mousasi earning a first-round submission.

Overeem, meanwhile, fought in Russia this past December and suffered his second consecutive loss, which put his post-Strikeforce record at 1-2. Along with his older brother, UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem, he was one of several fighters the UFC released amid a dispute between MMA team Golden Glory and UFC parent Zuffa. He went 1-1 for the now-defunct Strikeforce promotion.
