Michael Page sees Bellator title fight in future: 'Everyone's screaming for it to happen'

Michael Page added another victory to his undefeated resume at Bellator 144 this past weekend. Questions still remain, however, about how good Page really is.

Page (9-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) has grabbed the attention of the MMA world in his short career due to his flashy style. He fights with his hands near his waist while dancing around the cage and taunting opponents. It’s been an effective style thus far, and it’s scored him nine consecutive victories.

Although he’s entertaining, Page has fought primarily overmatched opponents incapable of shutting down his unique style. Such matchups only carry a luster for so long, though, and eventually Page must face sterner competition if he hopes to become a title-worthy welterweight contender.

Page said he’s doesn’t feel pressure to face tougher foes, but he is ready to make the jump in the near future because he aspires to be Bellator champion.

“I don’t believe I’m that far (from a title shot),” Page told MMAjunkie Radio. “Everyone’s screaming for it to happen, so I’m looking at next year. I’m in no rush. I know eventually that title will end up in my hands. I’ll let everyone fight amongst themselves for now, and I’ll come and swoop in and take it when the time is right.”

Page’s career has been carefully groomed since he started MMA in February 2012. He’s been given time to create a following and build other skills to complement his dangerous striking game.

“MVP” said he’s satisfied with the way in which his career has progressed. However, at 28, he’s already thinking about how he’ll be remembered in the sport and, one of his motivating factors is to leave an impact as an innovator.

“For me it’s more about leaving a legacy,” Page said. “The reason I say that is because everything else is packaged underneath it. Making money, title fights, winning belts, all that kind of stuff – it kind of comes as you go along. For me the most important thing is leaving behind a legacy people remember – this particular fighting style I’m bringing to that game and also have people use it.

“The hands-down style is effective, and I want people to start believing it in. Just the same way people used to first look down at the jiu-jitsu when it came out – now you know you have to learn your ground game before you can go in and take MMA fights. This is the same thing.”

Bringing new tactics to the sport is one way to be remembered, but another is through success. Page wants to have both, and that’s why his sights are ultimately set on Bellator’s 170-pound belt, which is currently held by Andrey Koreshkov.

“If I can be the best me on the day, none of these names mean anything because they’re not going to beat me,” Page said. “All I have to do is improve and be a better me as quickly as possible so when I get whoever I get – and that’s the thing: I genuinely don’t care. Whatever style, whatever person it is, the same result is going to happen.”
