Megumi Fujii rematches Jessica Aguilar in Oct. 5 retirement fight

megumi-fujii-1.jpgIn the final fight of her legendary MMA career, Megumi Fujii (26-2) will look to avenge a controversial loss to Jessica Aguilar (15-4).

The strawweight bout takes place Oct. 5 at Vale Tudo Japan 3 at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, according to MMARising.com.

Aguilar is ranked No. 1 and Fujii is No. 2 in the Unified Women’s Mixed Martial Arts Rankings.

Fujii and Aguilar first fought in May 2012 at Bellator 68, where Aguilar picked up a controversial unanimous-decision victory in a close back-and-forth fight. Aguilar supplanted Fujii as the world’s top 115-pound female fighter with the victory.

Aguilar has now won six straight and 10 of her past 11. The 31-year-old’s lone defeat during that span came to Zoila Frausto Gurgel in a 2010 Bellator tournament. Most recently, the American Top Team fighter edged Patricia Vidonic via split decision at Bellator 94, though the organization shuttered its women’s divisions soon after.

Fujii, meanwhile, concludes one of the longest and most productive careers in women’s MMA. A nine-year pro, the 39-year-old opened her pro run with a 22-0 record before a pair of controversial losses to Aguilar and Gurgel. Nineteen of her 26 career victories have come via submission.

Fujii most recently fought in December and earned a decision victory over Mei Yamaguchi at Vale Tudo Japan 2012.
