A heavyweight fight between Matt Mitrione (8-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) and Gabriel Gonzaga (16-8 MMA, 11-7 UFC) has been slated for December’s UFC on FOX 13 event.
UFC officials today confirmed the bout with FOXSports.com.
UFC on FOX 13 takes place Dec. 13 at U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix. The main card airs on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
It’s not clear where Mitrione vs. Gonzaga will be placed on the lineup.
Gonzaga is an honorable mention in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings and just outside the top 15.
Gonzaga, a 35-year-old former UFC title challenger, recently suffered a decision loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC on FOX 10. Prior to the setback, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist and heavy-handed striker was on a 5-1 run that included two knockouts and three submissions.
Mitrione, meanwhile, recently scored a 41-second knockout victory over Derrick Lewis at UFC Fight Night 50. The 36-year-old, who entered the UFC after appearing on “The Ultimate Fighter 10? and playing in the NFL, has now won two straight and three of his past four. Seven of his eight wins, which have all come in the UFC, ended via knockout.
