Mac Danzig vs. Melvin Guillard added to July's UFC on FOX 8 card in Seattle

mac-danzig-9.jpgThe July UFC on FOX 8 card has its first booking with the addition of a lightweight fight between a pair of “Ultimate Fighter” veterans.

Season 6 “TUF” winner Mac Danzig (21-10-1 MMA, 5-6) will meet Season 2 cast member Melvin Guillard (30-12-2 MMA, 11-8 UFC), and both fighters will be looking to get back in the win column.

UFC on FOX 8 takes place July 27 at KeyArena in Seattle. The main will air on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Danzig in November dropped a split decision to Takanori Gomi at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in Macau. He’s had an up-and-down run since snapping a three-fight win streak a little more than three years ago with a win over Justin Buchholz. He dropped a pair of fights to Matt Wiman – the first being controversial when he was said to be out from a choke, but clearly wasn’t. But he’s also had a “Knockout of the Night” win over Joe Stevenson, and the second loss to Wiman and loss to Gomi both earned him “Fight of the Night” honors. After starting his UFC career 2-0, including his “TUF 6? win, he dropped three straight fights to Clay Guida, Josh Neer and Jim Miller.

Guillard has been in the news of late after leaving the Blackzilians camp in South Florida and subsequently saying he was headed back to his old training home at Jackson’s MMA in New Mexico. But the Jackson’s team voted to keep him from rejoining that camp. Just where Guillard will wind up training remains to be seen. But a win appears to be crucial for him at this point. He has lost four of his past five after a five-fight win streak had him in title contention.

Guillard’s lone win in a five-fight stretch came against Fabricio Camoes at UFC 148. His losses were to Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller by submission, former teammate Donald Cerrone by knockout and Jamie Varner in December by split decision.

The UFC most recently visited Seattle in December for UFC on FOX 5, which featured a main event lightweight title fight between champion Benson Henderson, a Washington native, and challenger Nate Diaz. Henderson dominated the fight and won by unanimous decision. Prior to that, the UFC was at KeyArena in March 2011 for a UFC “Fight Night” event.

The UFC has no shortage of fighters from the Pacific Northwest, including flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, who is recovering from an injury, but has indicated a desire to headline the card. He was supposed to headline the TUF 17 Finale later this month against top contender John Moraga before his injury.
