Jon Fitch signs with World Series of Fighting

jon-fitch-11.jpgIn a widely anticipated move, onetime UFC welterweight title challenger Jon Fitch (24-5-1) has inked a multi-deal with the upstart World Series of Fighting.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed the news with a WSOF official following a report from MMAFighting.com.

Fitch is expected to make his promotional debut at WSOF 3, which takes place June 14 in Las Vegas. A venue has yet to be confirmed.

The American Kickboxing Academy welterweight was in talks with the promotion over several weeks, ironing out contract details. The WSOF expressed immediate interest in him following his release from UFC, which followed a decision loss to Demian Maia at UFC 156 this past month.

Fitch could not be reached for comment.

Prior to his loss, Fitch returned to the octagon following a long injury layoff to deliver a signature performance over up-and-comer Erick Silva at UFC 153. He received a “Fight of the Night” bonus of $70,000.

His release from the UFC prompted a wave of sympathy from fans who felt he had been prematurely released by the promotion. UFC President Dana White said the fighter was too expensive given his recent slide, though he anticipated Fitch would return after rebuilding his career in another promotion.

Prior to a 1-2-1 run, Fitch earned a 13-1 record in the UFC with his only loss coming to champ Georges St-Pierre at UFC 87.
