November’s UFC 205 lineup could soon have its second title fight.
A bout between strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) and fellow undefeated Polish star Karolina Kowalkiewicz (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is in the works for the card, which already features a welterweight title fight.
UFC officials today announced the bout following an initial report from FloCombat.com.
UFC 205 takes place Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.
Jedrzejczyk is No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA women’s strawweight rankings, and Kowalkiewicz is No. 4.
Jedrzejczyk, one of the top female fighters in the sport today, looks for her fourth consecutive title defenses after a title win over Carla Esparza and defenses over Jessica Penne, Valerie Letourneau and Claudia Gadelha. The 29-year-old muay Thai standout, who’s won three UFC fight-night bonuses, is undefeated with five stoppages since her pro debut in 2012.
She now meets Kowalkiewicz, a former KSW champion who moved into title contention with UFC victories over Randa Markos, Heather Jo Clark and former title challenger Rose Namajunas. The 30-year-old’s “Fight of the Night” win over Namajunas was a title-eliminator and came via split decision (though nearly every media outlet scored the fight for Kowalkiewicz, per MMADecisions.com).
The UFC 205 card now includes:
