Jason MacDonald Gets New Four-Fight Contract

Jason MacDonaldUFC middleweight Jason MacDonald (19-9 MMA, 3-2 UFC) has signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC, which will go into effect for his UFC 83 fight with Joe Doerksen.

The popular Canadian fighter made the announcement in his blog for sportsnet.ca.

The new contract will replace the his old deal, which had one fight remaining on it.

“I signed a new contract this week, which gives me some peace of mind,” MacDonald wrote. “Facing the last fight of a contract always puts on a bit of extra pressure to perform. I still want to perform of course, but now I know I have a little job security.”

MacDonald, 32, has been a fringe contender for the UFC’s middleweight title, but he lost the two fights that could have possibly earned him a title shot: vs. Rick Franklin at UFC 68 and vs. Yushin Okami at UFC 77. However, even with the losses, he’s won seven of his past nine fights and remains a fan favorite.

Upon entering the UFC, the eight-year fight veteran earned the unofficial nickname “TUF Killer” after quick submission victories over “The Ultimate Fighter” cast members Ed Herman and Chris Leben.

He’ll next fight in his home country. UFC 83 takes place at Montreal’s Bell Centre. It’ll be the first-ever event in Canada.
