Cruickshank seemingly had the fight won following a pinpoint right cross to the jaw of “Gamebred” but couldn’t capitalize, allowing Masvidal to recover and take the scrap to the mat.
The 29-year-old American Top Team product grounded “The Detroit Superstar” for the better portion of the final two rounds, ultimately receiving the nod from the judges.
Following the fight, Masvidal made it clear during an interview what he wants, and it involves a lightweight contender who has unequivocally said he will fight anytime, anywhere: Donald Cerrone.
“I knew I won the fight. I mean the first round was close but it’s hard not to give me the other rounds when I’m just dominating from the top,” Masvidal said. “He did catch me clean in the first round, but I woke up immediately and went back to work. I want Donald Cerrone next. He needs a fight and I need a fight; it makes sense.”
Masvidal has won five of his last six outings, with the lone loss coming by way of decision against Rustam Khabilov at UFC “Fight for the Troops 3.”
