Drew Brokenshire Keeps Climbing the Career Ladder, Takes Next Step at Cage Warriors Combat

Current CageSport featherweight champion Drew “Eternal Fire” Brokenshire has had quite a year.

After capturing the promotion’s 145-pound title last December, Brokenshire has defended his title twice against very tough opposition in Enoch Wilson and Marlin “Shorty” Weikel.

After three months off, Brokenshire will be making his debut for the Cage Warriors Combat promotion on their event Saturday night in Kent, Wash.

For Brokenshire, not only is it a change of promotion, but it also returns him to three-round fighting for the first time in over a year.

“It’s a big difference for me because my last three fights were title fights and now I’m going back down to three-rounders,” said Brokenshire. “That’ll be interesting to see how I make the change from five to three rounds.

“I think that’ll definitely be part of the game plan that I will have 10 less minutes to work. I’ll have to cram all that energy into 15 minutes and make it happen faster and make sure I get the finish earlier.”

At CWC 9, Brokenshire (12-3) will be taking on Strikeforce Challengers vet Sterling Ford (15-6) in what could be the evening’s favorite for Fight of the Night.

“He’s been doing this a long time and we actually sparred once a long time ago and I’m expecting a tough fight,” said Brokenshire of Ford. “He’s a rangy striker, and he recently changed camps, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of Sterling Ford comes out.

“I’ll be ready to go and push the pace the whole time and be in his face.”

Due to his time off, Brokenshire told MMAWeekly.com that he’s expecting to use this next fight to see where he’s at in this point of his career.

“The great thing about this next fight is that I haven’t had a fight since July and it’s the longest layoff I’ve had since I’ve started fighting, so I’m excited to see all the fighting come to fruition and see how much of a jump I’ve made over the last couple months,” said Brokenshire.

Looking forward to next year, with all he’s accomplished, should Brokenshire keep his current three-fight winning streak going, a move up to the next level of MMA could very well be warranted, as long as he feels he’s made the right progress in his game to make the jump.

“The biggest thing to me is that my only losses of late have come to strong wrestlers,” he said. “So I definitely want to test myself against a strong wrestler before I make the move up to a big show like that, just so I know I’m prepared and ready to make a run at a world title.”
