Details on UFC champ Ronda Rousey's role in 'The Expendables 3'

ronda-rousey-18.jpgRonda Rousey is used to big challenges, and her role in “The Expendables 3? is just that.

The UFC women’s bantamweight champion is no bit part in the action flick; she’s one of the “Young Expendables,” according to a working draft of the script obtained Wednesday by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Rousey plays Luna, an “athletic female bartender” in her 20s who joins up with the “Old Expendables” to battle one of their own.

Just like Rousey, Luna is quick with words and handy in a fight.

In all, the champ appears in over 20 scenes and has 35 lines of dialogue, though unsurprisingly, much of her job involves driving, flying, and shooting things.

While the script is a working draft – penned by husband-and-wife writing team Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, who wrote the recent action thriller “Olympus Has Fallen” – and is likely to be modified both before and during filming, it’s a big undertaking for Rousey, who’s never before acted in a feature film.

This past week, “Expendables” star and co-writer Sylvester Stallone surprised the MMA world when he announced via Twitter that Rousey had landed a role in the film. A summer 2014 release is expected for the movie.

On Tuesday, Rousey (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) said her new gig won’t interfere with her other one – defending her title at UFC 168, where she rematches rival Miesha Tate (13-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in the pay-per-view card’s co-main event on Dec. 28 in Las Vegas.

“I’m leaving soon, and I’m very fortunate that there’s going to be Victor Ortiz and (‘Expendables’ cast member) Randy Couture and other fighter-type people there, and I’m going to be able to have my camp come and do everything, so I’m not going to break training for it at all,” Rousey told MMAjunkie.com on the second stop of the UFC’s current “World Tour” at Club Nokia at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

When the promotional tour wraps later this month, Rousey reportedly will fly to Bulgaria to begin filming. She joins Stallone, Couture, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a bevy of other action stars.

Although tight-lipped about her role, Rousey said on Tuesday: “I’m probably going to play a kickass chick.”
