Cage Warriors 55 scraps flyweight tourney, Neil Seery-Mikael Silander for title

Cage Warriors 55 is headed to Dublin with a hometown fighter in a co-headliner for the organization’s inaugural flyweight title.

While initially expected to feature a single-night flyweight tournament, the event instead will feature Ireland’s Neil Seery (12-9) vs. Finland’s Mikael Silander (8-1) for the inaugural 125-pound championship.

Cage Warriors 55 takes place June 1 at The Helix in Dublin. The main card streams live and free on MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Facebook carries the prelims.

“I’m disappointed that we haven’t been able to keep the tournament on the card, but a few of the fighters at the top of our list had become unavailable due to injuries or having fights scheduled on other shows,” Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan stated. “Neil Seery has been the top performer in our flyweight division over the last year or so while Mikael Silander is one of the best in Europe and was already contracted to take part in the tournament. It will definitely make for a fitting fight to crown the first ever Cage Warriors flyweight champion.”

Seery is on a three-fight win streak and has won five of his past six fights. The recent victories have come over Mark Platts, Karl Harrison and Paul Marin, all of which came under the Cage Warriors banner. He meets Silander (8-1), a veteran of the European circuit who makes his promotional debut following a recent submission win over Wade Choate.

Also announced for the Cage Warriors 55 card is a lightweight bout between Paul Redmond (7-3), an Irishman with four straight Cage Warriors wins, and Marc Allen (7-2), an Englishman who makes his promotional debut on the strength of a three-fight win streak.

The latest Cage Warriors 55 card now includes:

• Champ Cathal Pendred vs. Che Mills – for welterweight title
• Neil Seery vs. Mikael Silander – for inaugural flyweight title
• Marc Allen vs. Paul Redmond
