CFA 11 results: Fallon Fox earns third-round submission win

fallon-fox-2.jpgAfter months of mostly unwanted attention, transgender fighter Fallon Fox (3-0) earned a third-round submission win over heavy underdog Allanna Jones (2-2).

The contest served as the co-main event of Friday night’s “Championship Fighting Alliance 11: Kyle vs. Wiuff 2? event, which took place at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The evening’s main card aired on AXS TV.

Fox opened her first-round offense with several snapping low kicks to the thigh that Jones declined to check. It was more patient attack than wild aggression, and Fox rarely flurried with her hands. She did score a pair of late takedowns and nearly secured an armlock in the final minute of the frame, but Jones pulled free and survived until the bell.

A stiff side kick hurt Jones early in the second, but she appeared the livelier fighter as Fox looked to slow. Flat-footed and breathing heavily, Fox pushed into a takedown attempt that saw her alertly scramble to top position. She’d ride out the round on the dominant spot, and she punctuated her control with a handful of heavy right hands from the top.

Fox moved slowly forward to start the third round, but she scored a takedown in the early stages of the frame and set up in top position. With less than two minutes remaining, Jones kicked her legs high in search of an armbar, but Fox avoided the hold and moved past the legs before pushing her knee to the neck of her opponent from north-south and earning a tap from her foe.

Fox moves on to meet Ashlee Evans-Smith in the finals of CFA’s $20,000 four-woman featherweight tournament.

In the night’s main event, UFC and Strikeforce vet Mike Kyle (20-9-1) made quick work of Travis Wiuff (68-18)

As Wiuff moved in with a power shot, Kyle slipped the punch and delivered a left hook that scored to the back of the head. Wiuff crashed to the floor and appeared to be immediately done, but the referee didn’t immediately intervene. Kyle reluctantly continued his punching attack until the bout was indeed halted after an additional three hammerfists, at which point he verbalized his disdain for the delayed stoppage, which came just 21 seconds into the fight.

Palomino, Soriano impress in victory

In lightweight action, six-time Bellator MMA veteran Luis Palomino (21-8) earned a brutal first-round finish of Robert Washington (15-8).

After chasing Washington for much of the opening frame, Palomino uncorked a massive right hand that landed flush on the chin and ended the contest at the 3:26 mark of the first round. As Washington crashed to the floor, Palomino didn’t bother to follow, simply raising his hands in victory for a walk-off shot.

Undefeated Blackzilian fighter Sean Soriano (8-0) kept his perfect career mark by defending his interim CFA featherweight title with a clear-cut win over Elvin Brito (6-2)

In control of the action from the opening bell, Soriano nearly finished the fight in the second round with an arm-triangle choke, but Brito patiently worked through what looked like a very tight hold. He would find himself in more trouble in the third, when a standing knee strike cracked open his nose and saw blood pour down his face.

The resilient Brito was cleared to continue, but things just continued to get worse. With blood gushing from several wounds on his face, both fighters were covered in plasma and the canvas resembled a crime scene. Brito refused to quit and deserves ample credit for unmistakable heart. But in the end, Soriano did enough to earn a clean sweep on all five judges’ cards.

Vila, Gordon pic up early wins

In a flyweight matchup, 42-year-old Alexis Vila (12-3) survived an early scare from a gritty Czar Sklavos (7-3) to grind out a unanimous-decision win. It was Sklavos who struck early, scoring with a stiff counterpunch that saw Vila wobbled. “The Exorcist” gutted through the difficulty and established control over the final two rounds by relying on aggressive takedowns to control the pace and positioning of the fight.

The night’s first fight saw Eddie Gordon (6-1) defeat Oscar Delgado (6-3) in a 190-pound catchweight contest. After a tentative opening round, Gordon took the fight to the floor early in the second, transitioned swiftly to the back and scored the fight-ending submission.
