Benson Henderson vs. T.J. Grant title fight possible for UFC on FOX Sports 1 1

tj-grant-10.jpgLAS VEGAS – T.J. Grant officially will get the next shot at Benson Henderson‘s UFC lightweight title, and the fight could headline the organization’s debut event on FOX Sports 1.

Grant stamped his ticket to the title fight at Saturday’s UFC 160 event, where he knocked out and upset former title challenger Gray Maynard (12-1-1 MMA, 9-2-1 UFC) on the pay-per-view main card at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Grant plans to get married in October and wants the title fight to happen before then. UFC President Dana White said that’s quite possible since Henderson (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) vs. Grant (21-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) is a realistic possibility for UFC on FOX Sports 1 1, which takes place Aug. 17 at TD Garden in Boston.

“There are four fights we’re looking at right now for that show, and that’s one of them,” White said.

He declined to the reveal the other possibilities, though as MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently reported, the event also will feature heavyweights Alistair Overeem (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC) vs. Travis Browne (14-1-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) in a non-headliner. The event is expected to feature a deep lineup as the UFC officially marks the move of its events from FX and FUEL TV to the soon-to-debut FOX Sports 1.

Although the UFC has billed fights as title eliminators only to rescind the title shots afterward, White said he saw everything he needed from Grant at UFC 160. While once a run-of-the-mill welterweight with a 3-3 UFC record, Grant has reinvented himself at lightweight and picked up five straight wins over the likes of Evan Dunham, Matt Wiman and Maynard.

White said Maynard, specifically, got a wakeup call.

“You notice when that fight started, Gray Maynard was not respecting him at all,” White said. “He was walking right into him throwing bombs at him and ended up getting caught.

“For T.J. to knock him out the way he did, he earned it tonight. He just turned it on and has been wrecking everybody, literally wrecking everybody.”
