BRISBANE, Australia -- All fighters save one made weight -- or at least got close enough -- to formalize the inaugural card from Impact FC, which hits the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.
Heavyweight headliners Josh Barnett and Geronimo “Mondragon” dos Santos both tipped the beam under 265 pounds, with the former UFC champion Barnett weighing in at 252, while dos Santos measured at 264.5 pounds. Incredibly, it's the lightest weight in the career of the monstrous “Mondragon,” whose career started as a still-muscular 300-plus-pounder.
The metric system also played a small dramatic role in the event.
UFC veteran Karo Parisyan winced anxiously as he clocked in at 77.3 kilograms, and then breathed a sigh of relief when he was informed from the row of media that it converted to under 171 pounds.
Meanwhile, Brazilian Joaquim Ferreira, who spent the duration of the morning sweating down to an even 205 pounds, got into a momentary spat with cornermen of opponent Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, who came in 206.4 pounds. Sokoudjou offered to remove his shorts, but Ferreira calmed and decided he was comfortable with Sokoudjou just a hair over the one-pound grace.
Tom Waters' opponent Jacob Mahony, a late replacement just announced Friday, will take the scales at 7 p.m. local time after working a shift at his day job.
