Anchored at Ascension Mixed Martial Arts in Atlanta, Assuncao finds himself in desperate need of a victory, having dropped back-to-back bouts for the first time in his career. The 28-year-old last appeared at WEC 49 in June, when he lost a split decision to the world-ranked Diego Nunes at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Assuncao counts wins over American Top Team’s Jorge Masvidal, Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Nick Mamalis and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 semi-finalist Joe Lauzon among his 15 career conquests. He has been finished only once in 18 professional appearances.
Davis has rattled off three wins in four fights. The 29-year-old Pat Miletich protégé was on the cusp of title contention at 145 pounds before being choked unconscious by Josh Grispi at WEC 49 four months ago. Davis, out of Kansas City, Mo., owns notable victories against Nunes, Strikeforce veteran Conor Heun and American Top Team’s Rafael Dias. He has secured more than half (11) of his 16 wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
A bantamweight showdown pairing former featherweight champion Urijah Faber with Japanese standout Takeya Mizugaki will headline WEC 52, along with a key featherweight duel pitting Grispi against Erik Koch. Meanwhile, one-time bantamweight king Brian Bowles will return to the cage in a featured 135-pound tilt against former International Fight League champion Wagnney Fabiano.
