New UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley was aiming to fight Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz as his first title defense, but UFC president Dana White says: “There are other guys deserving of a title shot. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is going to fight for the 170-pound title."
Thompson has won 7 straight and is currently ranked #2 in the division, right under Robbie Lawler, who just lost to the belt to Woodley on July 30th.
Dana White also says: “I fully expect Conor to come back and defend his 145-pound title."
There was some talk that Conor would have a third fight with Diaz if he wins the 2nd bout at UFC 202. Or possibly challenge for the lightweight title against Eddie Alvarez, who has been trying to push for a fight with Conor to earn a bigger payday in his first title defense.
But Dana is stating that he expects Conor to fight the interim featherweight champ Jose Aldo next.
