Round one was an almost all striking affair. It did hit the mat twice, but quickly Alvarado got back to standing where the fighters traded hard strikes with Mondragon landing the more effective punches and kicks. After getting back to his feet from an Alvarado takedown early in round two Mondragon was able to control the striking action throughout the rest of the round with Alvarado occasionally landing a stinging counter strike. Round three was all striking with Mondragon pressing forward and Alvarado countering. The judge's scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision and taking home the title was J. J. Mondragon
